How it works
How to remove the background
Choose your photo
Drop a photo on the cutting mat or choose one. Say whether it shows people or objects and animals.
Automatic cut-out
The first time, your browser fetches the cut-out file (a few megabytes). After that it cuts out on your own device, usually within a few seconds.
Refine the edge and download
Make the edge tighter or softer, choose transparent, white or a colour, and download. Transparent becomes a PNG.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo sent anywhere?
No. Your browser downloads a cut-out file once from a public library (Hugging Face), just as it would fetch a font. The cutting out itself happens on your device; your photo does not go with it.
Why does it say ‘people’ and ‘objects and animals’?
There are two cut-out files. One is made for people and captures hair and shoulders nicely. The other looks for the main object in the photo, such as a product, a plant or a pet. Choose whichever fits best; you can always try again with the other one.
Is the result as good as paid services?
For a clear photo with a calm background, the result is good. With fine hair, glass or a busy background, the edge may be less neat than with heavyweight paid services. The edge sliders let you fix a lot.
